Ask and you shall receive. The unremitting prayers of Maurice Lacroix’s faithful have been answered with the much-anticipated release of the sporty-chic AIKON Automatic Skeleton in 42mm. For nearly half a century, Maurice Lacroix has been hitting home run after home run, creating recognisable watches like the AIKON, at its watchmaking base located in Saignelégier, Switzerland. The brand’s sustained ability to make well-priced and well-designed watches that offer outstanding value and quality to its followers truly sets it apart. The old adage that the customer is always right is an art perfected by the brand. Ears prick. Eyes open. Maurice Lacroix listens. In fact, the brand goes as far as canvassing customers and retailers for feedback and listens to crowd-sourced opinions as seeds of inspiration for new watches.
When it was time to create a contemporary and dynamic watch with the urban watch wearer in mind, the brand looked to a popular model dating back to the ‘90s. The watch in question was the Calypso. The project started when Maurice Lacroix could no longer ignore the affection fans held for the discontinued model. The noise reached a crescendo in the 2010s and formed the impetus that set the wheels in motion. The creative team dissected the watch, examined the factors that sparked its success, and reinvented it for the present. Possessing all the right ingredients, the AIKON was born. It debuted in 2016 initially powered by quartz, followed by mechanical movements in 2018. Their immediate acceptance encouraged an expansive interpretation in a variety of materials, sizes and colours, with the latest being the AIKON Automatic Skeleton in a 42mm stainless steel case, spotlighting either the grey or the “Maurice Lacroix blue” open-worked tableau.
The 2025 novelties are meatier iterations of the 2022’s influential monochromatic 39mm reference in grey. While the predecessor was arrayed with an exclusive ML115 automatic calibre, made in partnership with the famed movement maker Sellita, to elevate the transparency of the open-worked architecture, permitting light to dance its way through the watch, the progenitors satisfy the desire of those who seek a larger watch or wish for a splash of colour.
The AIKON’s signature geometric and symmetric design has been preserved, along with the bevelled case and bracelet that makes the watch ergonomic and comfortable to wear. Legibility is enhanced with contrasting colours between the hands, indices and the open-worked movement. Thanks to the brushed and polished surfaces of the case and integrated bracelet, the watch expertly plays with the light. Innovation also extends beyond aesthetics and finishing as the new models are equipped with the user-friendly ML Easy Strap Exchange system, which enables the wearer to swap out one strap for another with simple clicks. Once more, Maurice Lacroix proves that it knows how to make a brilliant watch inside and out.
